The EAB comprises five members (a BT Group plc non-executive director and chairman of the EAB; a BT senior manager; and three independent members).
Chair of the EAB
Isabel was appointed to the BT Group plc board on 1 November 2014 and is chair of the BT Pensions Committee and the Equality of Access Board. Isabel is also a member of the Nominating & Governance and Remuneration committees. Isabel is currently Chair of the National House Building Council (NHBC) and Senior Independent Director at RSA plc. She was previously an Executive Director of Prudential’s UK business and Chair of Prudential International Assurance between 2002 and 2006, and established and served as Chief Executive of specialised pension buyout firm Synesis Life from 2006-2008. Isabel also held positions as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of Eureko from 1999-2002, and was the International Development Director for GE Insurance Holdings Limited from 1996-1999. Further Non-Executive Director positions held have included Standard Life, Phoenix Group Holdings, MGM Advantage, The Pension Regulator and QBE Insurance Group.
Edward Astle, Independent
Edward Astle joined the BT Equality of Access Board in 2013. In his executive career he was a director of National Grid Plc from 2001 to 2008, responsible for their non-regulated and telecoms businesses (most notably wireless infrastructure); non-executive chair of 3 telecommunications ventures 1999-2001; managing director of BICC Communications (and a director of BICC Group) from 1997 to 1999, and an executive and regional director of Cable and Wireless Plc from 1989 to 1997. Previously he held senior business and strategy positions in UK and France. He has also been Pro-Rector Enterprise at Imperial College London (2008 – 2013) and a non-executive director of Intertek Plc (2009 to 2016). He is currently chair of the board of the University of Manchester, Deputy Chair of the Advisory Board of Engie UK, Vice Chair of the Shannon Trust, and has recently been appointed to the Board of Openreach, where he chairs the Audit Risk and Compliance Committee.
Emin Gurdenli, Independent
Emin is a founding member and the chairman of Azenby, an independent advisory business for the wireless industry. He is an independent director of Bakcell, the Chairman of Azerconnect infrastructure JV in Azerbaijan and the Chairman of Cirrus Core Networks. In addition, Emin advises private equity firms and technology start-up companies. His career has included ten years in R&D with BT and the experience of building and operating T-Mobile’s UK network. Then, in the last ten years, he has held executive roles within Deutsche Telekom and most recently was in charge of Network Services in Everything Everywhere. Emin has served as a board member of T-Mobile International (UK) and Mobile Broadband Networks Ltd, as well as being a board observer with Nomad Digital and Ubiquisys on behalf of Deutsche Telekom.
Stephanie Liston, Independent
Stephanie is chief legal advisor to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of the British Virgin Islands, senior counsel to Coffey Graham (UK) Limited, associate director of Innovation Advisors, advisory board member of PUSH Technology Limited and Digi-Me Limited and founder and director of Women in Telecoms and Technology. Stephanie is a qualified lawyer in the US, UK and BVI and has been a senior partner in a number of leading international law firms. She served as a non-executive director of Ofcom and as a member of its Audit Committee from 2005 to 2008, an advisory board member of Orga Systems GmbH from 2010 to 2014, a director of the European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA) from 2000 to 2005, co-chairman of the Communications Committee of the International Bar Association from 2004-2006 and co-chair of the International Chapters Committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association from 2014 -2016.
Professor Tim Whitley
BT senior manager
Professor Tim Whitley is a BT Distinguished Engineer, is Managing Director Research and Innovation for BT, and Managing Director of BT’s Research & Development Campus at Adastral Park, Suffolk. He is accountable for all aspects of BT’s Global Research and Innovation activities, which include applied research, technology scouting and partnerships with world leading universities. From 2007 to 2011 he was BT Group Strategy Director. Tim is a Policy Fellow with the Centre for Science & Policy, University of Cambridge and is a Board member for the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership. He is BT visiting Professor with the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex. In December 2016, Tim was appointed as a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) by the UK Government.
The EAB is supported by the EAB Secretary, who ensures the EAB meets all of its governance and legal obligations under the Undertakings and supports the EAB Chairman in managing the activities and operations of the EAB. The Secretary is Lucy Williams.
